Tragic Collision Claims Lives of Four Fishermen Off Aomori Coast
In a heartbreaking maritime incident on March 17, 2026, at approximately 1:15 a.m. LT, the cargo vessel 'Suehiro Maru' collided with the fishing vessel 'Kofuku Maru No. 65' (IMO: 947430) around 20 kilometers from Misawa fishing port, located in Aomori Prefecture. The collision resulted in a swift capsizing of the fishing vessel, which was carrying a crew of 13. The captain of the 'Suehiro Maru', en route from Tomakomai to Hachinohe, promptly notified the Coast Guard's 2nd regional headquarters in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, at around 1:20 a.m. Immediate search operations were launched by the 'Suehiro Maru' and a nearby fishing boat, but efforts were hindered due to the darkness of early morning. Ultimately, nine crew members were rescued without serious injuries. Tragically, four other fishermen were reported missing. Recovery teams found one crew member tangled in a net at approximately 7 a.m., while the other three were discovered unconscious near the wreckage. Unfortunately, all four were pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. The 'Suehiro Maru' sustained visible damage, with a significant vertical scratch on its bow, after returning to Hachinohe post-collision. At the time of the incident, the weather conditions were clear, with wind speeds around 26 km/h and wave heights of one meter. The Hachinohe Coast Guard Office has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. The 'Suehiro Maru', operated by a shipping company based in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, was transporting a load of rocks after departing from Tomakomai Port on the evening of January 16, heading towards Kimitsu Port in Chiba Prefecture. The 'Kofuku Maru No. 65' had set sail from its home port in Hachinohe late on March 16 at about 10:45 p.m. For more on this story, including photos, visit [source link].
