Repairs Underway for Summit LNG in Chittagong Following Cyclone Damage
The Summit LNG arrived at the Chittagong port on July 11, after setting sail from Singapore on July 6. Following repairs, the vessel is expected to be operational again by mid-July. In July, Bangladesh is set to import six LNG cargoes through its long-term agreements, in addition to two more from the spot market, with one scheduled to arrive in mid-July and another anticipated between July 24-25. The Summit LNG suffered damage from a steel structure during Cyclone Remal in May, prompting the operator to declare force majeure on LNG deliveries.
Summit LNG Set for Mid-July Operations Resumption After Cyclone Repairs
The floating liquefied natural gas terminal, 'Summit LNG', is expected to return to service around July 14-15 after sustaining damage from Cyclone Remal. This intense cyclone battered the coastlines of India and Bangladesh with strong winds and heavy rainfall, prompting necessary repairs, a Petrobangla representative disclosed on July 4. Previously, Summit LNG announced plans to relocate to Singapore or the Middle East to undergo repairs. Currently, the vessel is docked at Sembcorp Marine Boulevard in Singapore. As a crucial state-owned entity, Petrobangla is responsible for LNG imports for Bangladesh, a nation of over 170 million citizens that heavily depends on natural gas for its energy requirements. Due to the damage incurred, Petrobangla had to cancel four spot cargo deliveries originally scheduled between late May and mid-June, affecting operations at one of Bangladesh's two floating LNG import terminals.
Repair Operations Underway for 'Summit LNG' After Cyclone Damage
Excelerate Energy, a prominent US-based company, anticipates that the 'Summit LNG', a critical asset to Bangladesh's second LNG terminal located off Moheshkhali Island in the Bay of Bengal, will complete essential repairs and resume its operations by the end of July 2024. The Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) sustained significant damage during cyclone Remal on May 27, necessitating a journey under its own power to a specialized shipyard for repairs. On June 12, 2024, the 'Summit LNG' successfully disconnected from the terminal and set sail towards a shipyard facility in Southeast Asia. The vessel encountered a floating object that repeatedly collided with its starboard side, resulting in a breach of the outer hull about one meter below the waterline, which caused water to enter the ballast tanks. With repair work underway, 'Summit LNG' aims to return to full operational capacity in support of Bangladesh's energy needs by the end of July.
