Naval Forces Capture 'Sun Voyage' for Illegal Cigarette Trafficking
On February 24, 2026, the 'Sun Voyage', a vessel crewed by individuals from Myanmar, was intercepted by the Naval Command Western Mindanao in Sultan Kudarat for allegedly smuggling over 3,000 master cases of cigarettes. The Philippine Navy had been monitoring the ship, which had been drifting near Kalamansig Port for an entire week, suspecting it might be in distress. Upon boarding the vessel, Navy personnel were shocked to uncover a significant cache of illegal cigarettes. The captain failed to produce any necessary import permits or documentation for the transported goods. While a complete inventory is still pending, preliminary evaluations suggest the seized cigarettes could be worth around P171 million. The 'Sun Voyage' was reportedly en route from Cambodia to Davao City and the master claimed the vessel was loaded with 7,000 master cases of cigarettes upon departure. During the towing process towards the naval headquarters in Zamboanga City, Navy forces noticed two smaller boats attempting to approach the 'Sun Voyage', raising suspicions that the ship was distributing contraband cargo. Once they spotted the Navy’s vessel, the smaller boats fled the scene. In a related development, the Navy encountered a motorized banca named MB Skyblue near Sebago Island in Basilan, where inspection revealed an additional 480 master cases of smuggled cigarettes. This prompted the Navy to tow the 'Sun Voyage' along with its seven crew members to Zamboanga City. Additionally, on the morning of February 25, the naval team intercepted the 'Skyblue' southeast of Sibago Island, discovering 460 more master cases of foreign-brand cigarettes valued at approximately PHP26.2 million. The skipper of the banca and crew members also could not provide valid documents for their cargo, and they were subsequently taken to the WMNC headquarters in Zamboanga City.
