Late at night on June 17, 2012, a significant maritime incident occurred on the Volga River when the general cargo ship Sv. Georgiy Pobedonosets lost steering control and collided with the tug OT-2117, which was towing four barge units. The collision took place near the 1743 kilometer mark close to Samara. As a result of the impact, the tug suffered serious damage, with a large hole appearing on its port side in the engine room area. In an effort to prevent sinking, the tug grounded itself on a nearby shoal approximately 800 meters from the shore. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported, but the engine room of the tug was compromised as it flooded. Meanwhile, the Sv. Georgiy Pobedonosets emerged unscathed and continued safely to Samara for an investigation. The vessel was on a journey from St. Petersburg carrying a cargo of steel.
