Cargo Vessel Allides with 'Nephrite' in Golcuk Limas Incident

Sep 23, 2019 13:42

On September 19, 2019, at 12:30 a.m., the Antigua Barbuda-flagged cargo ship 'Margaretha' was involved in a notable allision with the vessel 'Nephrite' at Golcuk Limas port. During the unberthing operations of the 'Margaretha', the ropes parted unexpectedly, leading to contact with the 'Nephrite'. Following the incident, the 'Margaretha' maneuvered to its designated anchorage under the guidance of a port pilot alongside tug support. Both vessels were found to have sustained significant structural damage. The 'Nephrite' exhibited damage at its aft end, characterized by holes and cracks measuring approximately three meters in length, while the 'Margaretha' suffered from various bends and indents in its forward upper forecastle section. After completing the necessary formalities and technical inspections, the 'Margaretha' received clearance to depart, setting sail from Izmit on September 20, with an estimated arrival at Rijeka on September 24. Meanwhile, the 'Nephrite' completed its discharge operations at Limas. It was then moved from Golcuk to Yalova, entering the Yasarsan shipyard on September 21 for essential permanent repairs. Following an eight-day repair period, the 'Nephrite' resumed her journey, sailing again on September 29 at 5:45 a.m., headed to Novorossiysk, where she arrived at 2:45 a.m. on October 2. In the aftermath of the incident, the harbor master initiated an investigation through their incident investigation desk. State and Hull and Machinery surveyors are now assessing the cause of the allision and the scope of the damages incurred. Depending on the investigation's findings, a fine for breaching safe navigation regulations may be enforced.
