Three Vessels Grounded in Volga-Caspian Sea Shipping Canal Encounter Difficulties
In a concerning incident on December 18, 2024, three ships have found themselves grounded in the Volga-Caspian Sea Shipping Canal. The vessels affected include the 'Rasul Gamzatov', the 'Port Olya-3', and the 'Svyatogor'. The alert was raised by the Main Directorate of the Russian Emergencies Ministry for the Astrakhan Region, following a notification from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC). The 'Rasul Gamzatov' ran aground at kilometre marker 170, while the 'Port Olya-3' was stranded at kilometre 176, and the 'Svyatogor' encountered grounding issues at kilometre 177.3. Fortunately, reports from the Ministry of Emergency Situations indicate that the crew members aboard these vessels are safe and did not require medical assistance. They also have access to sufficient food supplies. The grounding of these ships has led to a blockage in the canal, prompting the ship owner to take action to resolve the situation with the assistance of tugboats. Efforts are underway to clear the passage and restore normal operations in this crucial shipping route.
