Severe Weather Forces 'Polarcus Alima' to Dock for Crew Change Amid Southern Oil Exploration

Feb 24, 2012 22:14

The operational endeavors of the 'Polarcus Alima' have been severely impacted due to inclement weather conditions, leading the vessel to make a return to Port Otago for a necessary crew change. The crew has been engaged in an underwater survey of the Great South Basin, situated east and south of Southland. A planned helicopter crew change, which was scheduled for February 22, 2012, could not be executed due to unsafe weather conditions. While docked, the crew will also take the opportunity to replenish their supplies and fuel for the next leg of the journey. OMV, along with its joint venture partners, has made significant strides towards completing an extensive program to gather over 4,000 square kilometers of 3-D seismic data within exploration permits 50119 and 50120. This survey is expected to wrap up by mid-April. Notably, Shell joined the joint venture in August 2011 and will assume operational responsibilities of the permits once the 3-D seismic program concludes. The 'Polarcus Alima' is scheduled to set sail from Fryatt St Wharf on the night of February 24.

Environmental Concerns Surround Polarcus Alima's Upcoming Visit to Port Chalmers

Dec 12, 2011 22:21

Environmental advocates are voicing strong opposition to the scheduled arrival of the exploration vessel "Polarcus Alima" in southern waters. Set to dock at Port Chalmers on December 13, 2011, the vessel has departed from its berth in Wellington and is en route to Dunedin. In preparation for this, the supply vessel "Jaya Amazon" has already arrived in Otago Harbour on December 11, ahead of the mother ship's anticipated 6 a.m. berth at the Beach Street Wharf. Concerns are mounting as it is unclear whether protesters plan to mobilize southward to coincide with the commencement of a significant $50 million initiative that includes an in-depth hydrographic survey of the ocean floor in the Great South Basin. In October, Greenpeace activists had already targeted the "Polarcus Alima" during its operations near the Taranaki coast, raising alarms about potential oil exploration activities. The hydrographic survey conducted by the "Polarcus Alima" is expected to take until the end of 2013 to complete, with any decisions about subsequent oil drilling in the Great South Basin still pending.

Milestone Achieved: First X-Bow Ship Navigates Northern Sea Route

Oct 06, 2011 08:59

The seismic vessel 'Polarcus Alima', designed by Norway's Ulstein, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully traversing the Northern Sea Route (NSR) from Norway to the Asia-Pacific region. This groundbreaking journey, reported by The Motorship, marks the first recorded passage of a 3D seismic ship using Ulstein's innovative X-Bow design. The Polarcus Alima, a state-of-the-art 12-streamer vessel built at Drydocks World in Dubai, meets the strict requirements for ice navigation, possessing an ICE-1A classification or higher. The vessel's journey began on September 15, departing from Hammerfest after completing seismic operations in the Barents Sea. After covering a distance of 3,000 nautical miles in just nine days, Polarcus Alima successfully arrived at Cape Dezhnev, located in the Bering Straits.
