On May 4, 2021, at approximately noon, the Central Port Authority of Piraeus received notification from the naval agent of the vessel 'Tanzanite' regarding a mechanical failure during its journey from Piraeus to Malta. The ship, which carries a crew of 22, was subsequently prohibited from sailing until the necessary repairs were completed and a maintenance certificate from its classification society was submitted. On October 21, 2018, a tragic incident occurred aboard the 'Mia S' as a Ukrainian crew member lost his life approximately four miles off the coast of Flic en Flac, Mauritius. The crew member, experiencing severe discomfort, was placed on oxygen in a bid to stabilize his condition. In response to the urgent situation, a Chetak police helicopter was dispatched to facilitate an emergency evacuation. Despite the rapid response of the medical team on board the helicopter, upon arrival at the vessel’s location, the attending doctor could only confirm that the 48-year-old crew member had already succumbed to his ailments. His body has since been transported to the morgue for a thorough autopsy to determine the cause of death.
