Initiative Launched for Wreck Removal of 'Tamarii Tuamotu' in Takaroa
In a significant maritime operation, the dismantling of the shipwreck 'Tamarii Tuamotu', a 856 dwt vessel (IMO: 6706216) built in 1967 and previously owned by the now-defunct Vonken Company, has officially commenced. The ship, which has been stranded on the shores of Takaroa since 1998, saw all the necessary equipment loaded onto the 'Taporo 9' in Papeete on November 28, 2023. Setting sail at 6:30 p.m. for the Tuamotu Atoll, the 'Taporo 9' is set to tackle the challenging wreck removal operation. Contracted for the task, Raimanu Services is responsible for dismantling the wreck, which measures over 66 meters in length and weighs roughly 488 tonnes, requiring it to be cut into several sections during the procedure. The total expenditure for this project amounts to 52 million francs. Thankfully, the depollution process had already been completed following the initial grounding of the ship. This extensive project is projected to take a maximum of four months, with a dedicated team of five employees dispatched to the atoll and an additional two local hires planned. Once dismantling is complete, all waste materials will be transported back to Tahiti, where they will be entrusted to a specialized organization for proper processing. Taporo IX Comes to the Rescue of Grounded Longliner Mata'u
On June 1, 2012, the 'Taporo IX' responded to an emergency situation involving the tuna longliner 'Mata'u', which became stranded southeast of Pukapuka Atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago. The beleaguered longliner, measuring 20.70 meters in length and registered in Papeete, had been adrift for more than three weeks before running aground. Fortunately, the six crew members aboard were safely rescued, although the vessel itself was heavily damaged by a robust southeast swell ranging between 2 and 2.5 meters. In a coordinated operation, the 'Taporo IX' is set to assist in lightening the load of the 'Mata'u', which includes 700 pieces of tuna and its fuel tanks.
