Thea II Detained in Kingston upon Hull due to Deficiencies

Sep 27, 2025 22:35

On September 18, 2025, the vessel Thea II faced detention in Kingston upon Hull after inspectors identified a total of 21 deficiencies. Among these, one deficiency was classified as serious enough to warrant the detention: the ship's ISM certificate did not meet the required standards. Following a comprehensive inspection and necessary rectifications, the Thea II was released on September 26. The vessel is now en route to Rotterdam, with an expected arrival date of September 28.

MAIB Releases Findings on Thea II Grounding Incident

Aug 21, 2020 08:55

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has unveiled a comprehensive report detailing the grounding and subsequent recovery of the container vessel Thea II and the tug Svitzer Josephine in the Humber Estuary area. This incident occurred amid severe storm conditions on the evening of December 15, 2018. While navigating toward the Humber pilot station, the Thea II experienced an engine failure and was forced to anchor as it awaited tug assistance for a safe harbor entry. Unfortunately, during these turbulent conditions, the container ship began to drag its anchor, ultimately leading both vessels to ground on Binks Shoal prior to the rescue operation. Fortunately, both the Thea II and Svitzer Josephine were refloated later that evening with the incoming tide. The Svitzer Josephine managed to return to port under its own power. However, delays ensued as the ship managers attempted to negotiate terms with another tug operator for Thea II's tow. This resulted in the vessel being towed into Hull two days post-incident. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries or incidents of pollution. The MAIB's analysis revealed that Thea II's anchor dragging was due to an inadequate use of anchor chain and the absence of a second anchor. Additionally, the Svitzer Josephine ran aground as its captain, distracted by securing a towline to the Thea II, lost navigational focus and direction. The delay in arranging a tow for the Thea II following its refloat was attributed to the managers not fully grasping the critical situation until the UK Secretary of State's representative (SOSREP) intervened. In light of these findings, the MAIB has put forth recommendation 2020/128, urging the managers of the container ship to reassess their emergency response protocols to prevent future occurrences.

Damage Repaired: Thea II Returns to Service After Dry Dock in Emden

Dec 26, 2018 20:22

On December 26, 2018, the 'Thea II' was towed into Emden, Germany, as a non-operational ship with the assistance of the tug 'En Avant 10.' Following an extended repair period, the ship resumed its journey, setting sail again on January 23, 2019, at 11:40 PM. The next destination for the vessel was Rotterdam, where it successfully berthed at the RST Shortsea Container Terminal South on January 28 at 10:20 AM.

Thea II to Undergo Repairs After Engine Failure and Grounding Incident

Dec 19, 2018 13:00

The freighter 'Thea II' is set to enter drydock for essential repairs following a significant incident en route from Amsterdam to Hull, where it was carrying 85 containers. On December 15, at approximately 3 p.m., the ship encountered critical failures with both its main engine and steering gear while approaching the Humber Estuary, just before taking on a pilot. This mechanical failure led to the vessel running aground on Chequer Shoal, located near Spurn Point at coordinates 53 33 48 N, 000 10 36 E. Subsequently, the ship dragged its anchor towards 'The Binks' off Spurn Head, which likely resulted in damage to its steering and rudder. Additionally, its poop starboard quarter sustained damages caused by one of the assisting tugs. Conditions at the scene were challenging, with southeast winds reaching force 8 and swells up to four meters, necessitating a wait for high tide to refloat the vessel. Once refloated, 'Thea II' was towed using alternative tugs as per the terms of the Lloyd's Open Form (LOF) agreement. Before it can undergo drydocking, the ship will first need to discharge its cargo at King George Dock in Kingston upon Hull. In the coming days, the vessel will be moved to a temporary layby berth while preparations for drydocking are finalized.
