Disabled Bulk Carrier 'Ecofaith G.O.' Under Tow to Zhoushan for Essential Repairs
The bulk carrier 'Ecofaith G.O.' is presently being towed from Dasha, where it embarked on April 15, 2017, to Zhoushan. The Alp Maritime tug 'Alp Striker' is expected to complete the journey by May 9 for significant repairs following a breakage of its intermediate shaft while the vessel was in ballast, en route from China to Prince Rupert with a stop in South Korea. At the moment of distress, the vessel was situated approximately 214 nautical miles away from Kodiak Island and around 650 nautical miles from Prince Rupert. The malfunction of the shaft resulted in water ingress into the engine room, prompting immediate action from Tsavliris, appointed as the salvor, along with its partners, Resolve Marine and Alaska Maritime Agencies. Foss Maritime’s ice-class tug 'Michele Foss' was dispatched to the scene despite harsh weather conditions, reaching the location five days later. The next day, a successful towage connection was established. The rescue operation included a plan for transporting the 'Ecofaith G.O.' to Dutch Harbor for urgent attention and an underwater inspection before proceeding to China for complete repairs. Prior to towing, the salvor implemented safety measures to secure the tail shaft to prevent further movement and minimize additional water entry. A specialized salvage team from Greece, comprising a senior salvage master, a naval architect, and a senior salvage engineer, was mobilized to Dutch Harbor. Days later, teams from Tsavliris and subcontractor Resolve Marine boarded the tug 'Resolve Pioneer' (IMO: 7528843) at Dutch Harbor to inspect the 'Ecofaith G.O.' as required by the U.S. Coast Guard. The next day, it was confirmed that there was no water being pumped out and no signs of pollution during their rendezvous with the convoy. They safely arrived at Board Bay, where the vessel was secured to an emergency mooring buoy, with aid from two port tugs and a mooring boat for an engine room inspection. Temporary repairs were deemed successful, with the shaft securely in place and the rate of water ingress stabilized. Divers commenced sealing the stern tube while engineers took precise measurements for the fabrication of steel plates and stiffeners to stabilize the shafting system. The vessel was then transferred to a stationary berth, allowing the salvage team to proceed with preparations for the journey to China. As temporary repairs progressed, divers completed sealing the stern tube, and the integrity of the vessel was confirmed through ballasting. A towing bracket was also mounted on the forecastle. Ultimately, 20 days after the start of salvage services, Tsavliris concluded their operation, returning the ship to its owners and initiating the tow to China.
Bulk Carrier 'Ecofaith G.O.' Safely Towed to Unalaska for Repairs
On March 11, 2017, the bulk carrier 'Ecofaith G.O.' was successfully towed to Broad Bay in Unalaska following a propulsion failure while en route to Prince Rupert. The vessel, which was traveling in ballast with a crew of 20 on board, unexpectedly stalled in international waters, prompting a response from the U.S. Coast Guard. Although the situation did not qualify as an emergency, the Coast Guard initiated arrangements for the tug 'Michelle Foss', which departed from Seattle to assist in bringing the ship into Dutch Harbor. As the convoy approached Unimak Pass, the local salvage vessel 'Resolve Pioneer' joined and guided the 'Ecofaith G.O.' to the emergency mooring station at Broad Bay. Salvage experts from Resolve Magone Marine commenced an inspection of the bulk carrier upon arrival. They plan to implement short-term repairs to facilitate the vessel's journey to China for more extensive work. Diving assessments were conducted to identify the necessary repairs required to ensure the safe transport of the 'Ecofaith G.O.'. Meanwhile, both the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Coast Guard are closely monitoring the situation for any potential pollution incidents. Fortunately, responders have reported no evidence of oil sheen in the surrounding waters.
