Dramatic Rescue Operation Saves 39 Migrants in the Strait of Pas de Calais

Oct 23, 2021 22:06

On October 23, 2021, a significant rescue operation unfolded in the Strait of Pas de Calais when the CROSS Gris-Nez received an urgent report about a distressed boat, leading to several migrants being thrown overboard. The French authorities quickly initiated a MAYDAY RELAY, deploying resources including a Dauphin helicopter from the French Navy stationed in Le Touquet, the patrol vessel 'Cormorant', and the lifeboat 'President Jacques Huret' from the Boulogne-sur-Mer SNSM station. Additionally, a fishing vessel named 'Parti De Rien' and two nearby merchant ships, 'Arco Dijk' and 'Thun Garland', joined the effort. The British Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 163, was also alerted to assist in the operation. Upon arrival, the Dauphin helicopter reported that the migrant vessel had sunk, leaving 39 individuals struggling in the water. In a swift response, six of the castaways were rescued and airlifted to a hospital in Boulogne. Meanwhile, the 'Arco Dijk' and 'Thun Garland' deployed their rescue boats to recover additional castaways from the sea, while the fishing vessel joined the rescue efforts. Those evacuated by the merchant ships were subsequently taken aboard the 'Parti De Rien'. Two crew members from the 'President Jacques Huret' were sent to assess the medical condition of the 33 individuals on the fishing vessel. These rescued migrants were then escorted to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, where they received assistance from border police and the departmental fire and rescue operational center. To ensure the safety of any remaining individuals in distress, the Dauphin helicopter, 'Cormorant', and Rescue 163 continued to patrol the area.
