Second Vessel of China COSCO Holdings Detained Amid Payment Disputes

Aug 09, 2011 15:35

The 'Jia Li Hai', a vessel under China COSCO Holdings Co., has been detained in Louisiana, marking the second time within a month that a ship belonging to the largest maritime company in China has faced arrest due to unpaid fees. This detention follows a legal move by Classic Maritime Inc., which is pursuing $2.7 million in outstanding payments from Cosco unit Cosco Bulk Carrier Co. The warrant for the ship’s detainment was issued by Judge Lance M. Africk on August 3, 2011, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The ongoing disputes revolve around long-term charter contracts that Cosco entered into before market rates tumbled due to decreased demand and increased vessel capacity. In a related incident involving the 'Tianjin' in Singapore, Cosco had been paying an exorbitant $87,000 daily for a capesize vessel—approximately eight times the current market rates. The shipping industry continues to feel the strain as companies seek to recover costs through legal channels.
