Container Ship Allision in Busan: Safmarine Nokwanda Strikes Tianjin
On March 2, 2019, at 8 a.m., the container vessel 'Safmarine Nokwanda' while approaching the Busan New Port International Container Terminal (PNIT) from Yokohama, collided with the 'Tianjin' which was already docked. The allision resulted in considerable damage, as the Safmarine Nokwanda struck the stern of the berthed Tianjin, leading to the crushing and collapse of several containers. The impact also inflicted structural damages on the stern of the Tianjin. Meanwhile, the Safmarine Nokwanda sustained bow damages, including a breach above the waterline. After executing temporary repairs, the Safmarine Nokwanda departed from Busan at 1:45 a.m. on March 3, setting sail for Shanghai, where it is anticipated to arrive by 8:15 a.m. on March 4. The Tianjin began its journey from Busan later on March 3, leaving the port at 3:40 p.m. en route to Balboa, with an estimated arrival date of March 22. ZIM Strengthens AEX-1 Service with Deployment of 10,000 TEU Vessels
ZIM is set to enhance its participation in the AEX-1 service by deploying three of its large 10,000 TEU vessels, a strategic move following the suspension of the AEX-2 service. Beginning at the end of June, the shipping giant will introduce the 10,062-TEU vessels—Tianjin, Zim Antwerp, and Zim Rotterdam—into the AEX-1 service, where it operates alongside major carriers including CMA CGM, Cosco, and Yang Ming, according to insights from Alphaliner. This transition involves replacing three of the currently deployed nine CSCL ships, each with a capacity of 8,500 TEU. The decision to move these vessels comes as the company pauses the CES 2/AEX-2 service, which is a collaborative effort with Evergreen and CSCL, starting mid-June. Additionally, the Zim Djibouti, another 10,062-TEU vessel, will commence operations in the FE-USWC PNX service. Notably, two of these vessels—Tianjin and Zim Rotterdam—are scheduled for redelivery to ZIM in June, concluding a three-year charter with Evergreen. In a bid to maintain direct routing previously available through the CES 2/AEX-2 service, the AEX-1 will introduce an additional call at Antwerp, with the inaugural Antwerp stop slated for July 16 on the voyage departing Shanghai on June 12. Furthermore, the route will see Nansha replace Hong Kong as the Pearl River area call on the return journey from Europe to China.
