US Navy Intercepts Stateless Tanker ‘Tifani’ Sanctioned for Smuggling Iranian Oil
In a significant operation on April 20, 2026, the United States Navy successfully intercepted the tanker ‘Tifani’ as it made its journey from Dongjiakou to Singapore. The vessel, flagged as stateless, has been under sanctions for its involvement in the illegal smuggling of Iranian crude oil. The interception took place in the Indo-Pacific region, where US Marines were deployed via helicopter into the Bay of Bengal, safely boarding the ship without incident. The ‘Tifani’ was reportedly carrying approximately two million barrels of crude oil, which had been loaded at Kharg Island in early April. Prior to its interception, the tanker navigated past Dondra Head on April 19 before entering South-East Asian waters on April 20 at a speed of around six knots. This operation fell under the jurisdiction of US INDOPACOM (Indo-Pacific Command), which oversees operations in the Indian and Pacific oceans. The 'Tifani' has a notable history of sailing under various flags, including those of Malaysia, St. Kitts and Nevis, Tanzania, Cameroon, Panama, and Palau, but currently it is listed as having an “unknown” flag. The Pentagon characterized the vessel as “stateless” when announcing the boarding operation. Coast Guard Executes Medical Evacuation 92 Miles Off Galveston
On the morning of November 9, 2018, the United States Coast Guard conducted a medevac operation approximately 92 miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas. The incident was triggered when the captain of the 'Bunga Kastori' reported that their chief engineer, a 66-year-old man, was experiencing severe breathing difficulties and required urgent medical attention. In response, watchstanders from Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston liaised with the on-call flight surgeon, who advised initiating a medevac. Following this, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Houston, along with support from an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew from Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi, was dispatched to the location. The helicopter crew skillfully hoisted the affected crew member and safely transported him to Scholes International Airport in Galveston, where he was met by emergency medical services personnel. At the time of the evacuation, sea conditions were reported to be calm, with 1-foot waves and winds at 10 mph.
