Emergency Medical Evacuation 450 Miles Southeast of St. John's
In a dramatic medevac operation late on April 8, 2017, a crew member from the cargo vessel "Tokyo Express" required urgent medical assistance approximately 450 miles southeast of St. John's. The Royal Canadian Air Force swiftly deployed a Cormorant helicopter, which was en route from Gander. Upon arrival at St. John's, the helicopter underwent refueling and offloaded non-essential equipment to maximize fuel capacity. It then proceeded to the "Terra Nova," a Floating Production Storage and Offloading Vessel (FPSO) that was prepared for the incoming rescue operation. As the Cormorant approached the "Tokyo Express," a Hercules aircraft circled above, illuminating the scene with flares to ensure optimum visibility for the rescue crew. Two Search and Rescue technicians were lowered in a rescue basket to assess the situation on board. After evaluating the patient, they successfully hoisted him into the Cormorant. The crew member was then transported to a hospital in St. John's for further treatment related to an undisclosed medical condition. Tokyo Express Aids Coast Guard in Successful Rescue of Two from Sinking Vessel Off Seattle
On Friday morning, a dramatic rescue unfolded off the coast of Seattle as the crew of the Tokyo Express, a 664-foot container ship, played a crucial role in the emergency operation. The Coast Guard received a distress call from the 67-foot vessel, Lady A, at approximately 7:31 a.m., reporting that two individuals were abandoning ship into their life raft due to the vessel's sinking near Dungeness Spit. In response to the urgent situation, Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound dispatched both a response boat and a helicopter to assist in the rescue while also notifying nearby vessels of the incident. As fate would have it, the crew aboard the Tokyo Express launched a small rescue boat that reached the scene around the same time as the Coast Guard response boat at 8:09 a.m. Upon arrival, rescuers discovered the man and woman still safely aboard the Lady A, unharmed by the ordeal. Thanks to the swift coordination between the Tokyo Express crew and the Coast Guard, both individuals were successfully rescued without injury.
