Tonsberg Crew Freed After Month-Long Captivity in Gulf of Guinea
In a significant development, the Polish Foreign Ministry announced the release of the crew members from the cargo vessel 'Tonsberg', who had been held hostage by pirates since December 13, 2021, in the Gulf of Guinea. Their freedom was secured on January 17, 2022, after weeks of tension and negotiations. Impressively, one of the Polish sailors has already made his way back home, marking a bittersweet end to a harrowing ordeal.
Pirate Attack Leads to Hostage Situation in Gulf of Guinea
On December 13, 2021, the Danish frigate 'Esbern Snare' received critical reports of a potential pirate presence near Bioko Island. Promptly, the frigate headed towards the suspected pirate location, dispatching a reconnaissance helicopter for early observations. As the helicopter approached the area, it intercepted a Mayday call from the 'Tonsberg,' a vessel that had been boarded by pirates at coordinates 03 11 N 007 49 E while traveling from Kribi to Cotonou in the Gulf of Guinea. The helicopter crew spotted a skiff alongside the 'Tonsberg,' occupied by an array of alleged pirates and six crew members taken hostage. According to reports, the suspects tossed items overboard in an apparent attempt to enhance their speed as they navigated north towards the Niger Delta with the captives. Maintaining a safe distance to protect the hostages, the Seahawk helicopter closely monitored the skiff before returning to the 'Esbern Snare,' which is restricted from pursuing pirates in national waters. During this operation, the frigate was alerted that multiple crew members were still aboard the container ship, with one individual suffering gunshot wounds to the lower leg. Fortunately, no pirates were found aboard the vessel, allowing a boarding team to be deployed to provide immediate first aid. The injured crew member was later transferred to the 'Esbern Snare' for further medical care; he was reported to be in stable condition. The boarding team remained on the container ship, continuing support efforts and searching for two crew members unaccounted for following the attack. The affected crew hailed from Poland, Ukraine, and the Philippines.
