On July 18, 2024, the Maritime Captaincy of Ceuta took decisive action to halt the operations of the cargo ship 'Tony Stark', which was making its way from Bilbao to Manfredonia. This decision came after a significant fuel oil spill, estimated at one ton, occurred during a bunkering operation involving the Spanish-flagged tanker 'Spabunker Cuarenta' (IMO: 9416886) at the port's anchorage, located at 35° 54.67' N 005° 19.60' W. Immediately responding to the incident, the SAR vessel 'Salvamar Atria' was dispatched by Salvamento Marítimo to manage the situation. An oil boom was deployed at the scene, and efforts were complemented by the resources of Ecoceuta, which extended the containment barrier around the stern of the affected vessels. In addition, Captaincy inspectors are conducting a thorough investigation under the PSC MoU to determine the specifics of the incident. Following the assessment, the Captaincy is expected to initiate a sanctioning process and require a financial guarantee before allowing the 'Tony Stark' to continue its voyage.
