The captain of the cargo ship Tosa, involved in a tragic incident that led to the loss of two lives, arrived back in Mangalore on October 2, 2010. He is currently facing charges of involuntary manslaughter in Taiwan, with a verdict expected to be announced around mid-October. The captain's release came after negotiations reportedly involving financial compensation. The Indian government is set to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Tosa case, particularly focusing on the judicial process in Taiwan, where the captain was held for 18 months. The case drew the attention of local maritime authorities in May of this year. The incident occurred on April 17, 2009, when the Tosa collided with the Taiwanese fishing trawler Shingtong Cheng 86. While the captain was arrested along with a Bangladeshi second officer and a Filipino seaman, preliminary investigations suggest that the Tosa may not have struck the trawler directly; rather, the smaller vessel may have capsized in the wake created by the larger ship.
