Historic Arrival of First LNG Cargo in Rotterdam

Jun 11, 2011 13:55

On June 13, 2011, the LNG tanker "British Trader" made history by being the first vessel to deliver liquefied natural gas to Rotterdam, arriving from Trinidad and Tobago. The ship, carrying a significant cargo of approximately 180,000 cubic meters of natural gas, is scheduled to dock at the jetty of the Maasvlakte between midnight and 4 a.m. This landmark delivery marks the inaugural operation at the new terminal, which is a collaborative venture between Vopak and Gasunie. Prior to the arrival of the "British Trader," the terminal's storage facilities had been pre-cooled down to an astonishing minus 195 degrees Celsius using liquid nitrogen, ensuring optimal conditions for LNG. The tanker will be escorted by four tugs and two patrol boats from the Port Authority, with two pilots on board to guarantee a safe docking process—a standard requirement for all future LNG tankers arriving at Rotterdam. Following this initial delivery, the next LNG vessel is anticipated to arrive in September, coinciding with the official launch of the gate terminal. The Port Authority projects that, in the forthcoming years, the terminal will be handling an average of one LNG shipment daily. Ships will execute a U-turn within the Caland Canal and Beerkanaal, allowing them to depart with their sterns first, thus eliminating the need for backward navigation and enabling a smoother operation as they regulate their speed.
