Coast Guard Executes Timely Medevac Off Cold Bay for Injured Deckhand
On December 11, 2014, the U.S. Coast Guard executed a critical medevac of a 23-year-old deckhand from the fishing vessel "Trailblazer," located approximately 75 miles north of Cold Bay. The emergency call was initiated by the operator of the "Trailblazer" after the young man's hand was severely injured by a crab pot launcher, requiring urgent medical intervention. Coast Guard 17th District command center watchstanders quickly coordinated the response, consulting with a duty flight surgeon who confirmed the need for a medevac. In a prompt reaction, they deployed a Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak, who were forward stationed in Cold Bay. The helicopter crew skillfully hoisted the injured man aboard and safely transported him to Anna Livingston Memorial Clinic in Cold Bay for further medical care. This swift action underscores the Coast Guard's commitment to ensuring the health and safety of those at sea.
