The search for a missing crew member aboard the Eships Shamal was officially suspended on the night of September 3, 2017. The operation commenced at 12:30 p.m. when the CROSS Etel was alerted to the crew member's disappearance while the vessel was anchored in the waiting area of the port of Saint-Nazaire, located 7.5 nautical miles from Saint-Gildas Point. In response to the urgent alert, a Dauphin helicopter from the French Navy and lifeboats from the SNSM stations in Noirmoutier and Pornichet were deployed to aid in the search efforts. By 6:45 p.m., the helicopters were called back, while the lifeboats from Pornic and Croisic continued the search.
