Significant Damage to Cargo Ship 'Hanoi' After Grounding Incident in Hamburg
On the evening of November 25, 2014, the cargo vessel 'Hanoi', en route from Hvide Sande, encountered a serious incident when it ran aground at the junction of the Rethe and Neuhöfer Canal in Hamburg. This grounding occurred amid thick fog, leading the ship to strike a concrete ring that formed a tip of sheet piling. The collision resulted in notable damage to the ship’s stem, with the hull suffering deformation on the starboard side near the forecastle for approximately 4 meters and on the port side for about 3 meters. Additionally, a significant crack measuring around 50 cm by 15 cm developed, allowing water to ingress on the starboard side. Fortunately, the vessel's onboard pumps managed to control the flooding. The sheet piling was also compromised due to the impact. Following the incident, police detained the ship, which was subsequently docked at warehouse 71/72 at the Auguste Victoria Quay within the Kaiser Wilhelm-Port on November 26. The 'Hanoi' departed from Hamburg on November 28, at 1:45 PM, headed for the Husum Shipyard for essential repairs, where it arrived early on November 29 at 5:00 AM.
