What Crew Members Say About True-Conrad

The grounding incident involving the bulk carrier 'True Conrad' at the entrance of the Companhia Siderurgica Terminal Nacional (CSN) in Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, has seen effective remediation efforts. Occurring on May 10, 2023, the vessel sustained damage to its ballast tank and subsequently anchored near buoys 1 and 2 for urgent repairs. In response to the incident, DelItacuruca deployed a Naval Inspection team to evaluate the damage. Collaborating with the Port Authority of Rio de Janeiro (CPRJ) and military personnel from DelItacuruca, the team conducted a thorough examination of both the ship's structural integrity and its documentation. Fortunately, there were no indications of water pollution, such as oil leakage, reported in the vicinity of the grounded vessel. The ship's owner and Master were promptly notified to provide necessary clarifications regarding the incident, in adherence to item II, Art. 26 of Decree 2596/1998 (RLESTA). They were also instructed to follow appropriate safety protocols. By May 16, underwater repairs addressing the impacted ballast tanks had been successfully completed, with an internal inspection of the tanks scheduled for May 18. Following the completion of the investigation and requisite legal processes, findings will be directed to the Maritime Court for further evaluation, with subsequent review by the Navy's Special Prosecutor's Office. As of May 26, 2023, the 'True Conrad' continues to be securely anchored off Itaguai while awaiting the final assessments.
