German Authorities Intercept Tanker for Illegal Waste Disposal in EEZ
On July 5, 2026, the German Federal Police's patrol boat ''Bad Düben'' successfully intercepted the tanker 'Twist' while it was conducting illegal waste disposal in Germany's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the North Sea. The vessel, which had been journeying from Vasilikos to Amsterdam and had recently navigated through the Kiel Canal, caught the attention of the operations center due to its erratic movements near vital maritime infrastructure. This prompted the deployment of the patrol vessel for an inspection. To ensure thorough monitoring, a drone was launched from the 'Bad Düben' to observe the tanker from above. While initially scanning the waters around the vessel, no irregular activities were noted. However, as the drone hovered over the 'Twist', which was at a drifting state, the crew was seen discarding several garbage bags into the sea. Upon communication with the vessel's crew via marine radio, they initially denied releasing any tank washings or substances into the ocean. Yet, when confronted with the drone's video evidence, the captain conceded that a team member had mistakenly disposed of shredded food waste overboard. This act was a breach of Annex V of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), which aims to minimize pollution in the marine environment. Furthermore, the drone footage highlighted improper storage of additional waste on the upper deck, which is also against regulations. The crew received a formal warning and were instructed to properly secure the remaining waste on the upper deck. Subsequently, an IMO report detailing the incident was prepared for submission to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) to facilitate any necessary legal actions. The 'Twist' subsequently docked at the EVOS Amsterdam on July 6. For more details, see the report with accompanying photo here: https://www.presseportal.de/blaulicht/pm/70260/6308809.
