The Uhl-Fresh: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On May 31, 2026, an allision took place off the northwest anchorage of the Kiel Canal near Brunsbüttel, involving the heavy-lift vessel 'UHL Fresh' and the container ship 'Nordic Italia' (IMO: 9474395). The 'UHL Fresh', making its way from Eemshaven to Mukran, collided with the 'Nordic Italia', which was heading from Antwerp to Helsinki. The incident occurred at approximately 5:43 a.m. as the 'UHL Fresh' approached the anchored 'Nordic Italia' at a slow speed, compounded by the outgoing tide affecting its movement. The collision resulted in damage to both vessels about six meters above the waterline, with the port stern of the 'UHL Fresh' striking the starboard bow of the 'Nordic Italia.' Thankfully, there were no injuries reported, nor any fuel spill from either ship. In response to the incident, the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BG Verkehr) implemented a sailing restriction on both vessels until confirmation of their classifications could be established. The water police have initiated an investigation into the accident. Following inspections, the 'Nordic Italia' was cleared to continue its journey at 6:20 p.m., with an estimated arrival in Helsinki set for June 3. The 'UHL Fresh' resumed its voyage later at 9:30 p.m., reaching its destination in Mukran on June 1.
