Trawler Incident Near Harlingen: Quick Response Averted Major Crisis
On January 26, 2018, the fishing vessel 'Gertjan - UK 189' encountered trouble when it ran aground on the eastern side of Pollendam in the Dutch Wadden Sea, just a few hundred meters away from Harlingen. The incident occurred due to poor visibility, which hampered navigation and ultimately led to the vessel's grounding. A swift salvage operation commenced that afternoon, involving three tugboats from salvage companies Tuinman and Noordgat; however, their efforts proved futile as the water levels dropped. Rijkswaterstaat scheduled a subsequent attempt for the night, capitalizing on the high tide expected around 2 a.m. on January 27. In the meantime, the patrol boat 'RWS 76' provided security for the stranded trawler. Fortunately, at 3 a.m., the dedicated team succeeded in freeing the 'Gertjan - UK 189,' allowing it to safely navigate into the port of Harlingen by 3:40 a.m. The prompt actions of the salvage teams and patrol vessels ensured a favorable outcome in this maritime incident.
Rescue Operation: Trawler 'Gert Jan' Successfully Saved from Newcombe Sands
On the morning of July 26, 2013, the trawler 'Gert Jan' encountered trouble when it ran aground near the entrance of Lowestoft harbour, located just half a mile from the pier heads on Newcombe Sands. Fortunately, the Lowestoft RNLI lifeboat crew promptly responded to the emergency call at 8:06 a.m. The volunteer team aboard the all-weather lifeboat 'Spirit of Lowestoft' reached the stranded vessel within minutes. At the time, the trawler was dealing with challenging flood tide conditions that were pushing it towards the sandy obstacle. Despite the crew's previous attempts to dislodge the vessel, their efforts had failed, and assistance was crucial. Once on the scene, the lifeboat crew secured a towline and maneuvered the trawler's bow into the tide. With a coordinated effort, including the trawler’s own engines, the team succeeded in freeing 'Gert Jan' within just ten minutes. The fishing vessel was en route from Den Helder to Lowestoft and had nearly reached its destination when it encountered this mishap.
