Fire Erupts on Vehicles Carrier 'Cape Knox' in New Orleans
On May 31, 2019, a significant fire ignited in the engine room of the vehicles carrier 'Cape Knox' while it was docked at the Poland Avenue Wharf in New Orleans. The local fire department received the emergency call at 4:20 PM and swiftly dispatched fire engines that arrived within a mere five minutes to address the blaze. The fire emanated from a large container, approximately 100 square feet in size, packed with diesel fuel sludge, located adjacent to the engine room. Due to complications encountered during firefighting efforts, a second-alarm was called at 5:03 PM, prompting additional resources to the scene. Firefighters faced extreme challenges as they deployed confined space operations, necessitating the removal of standard firefighting gear to navigate through a narrow access point, tackling the flames one by one. Upon reaching the fire’s vicinity, the firefighters were pressed for time as their air supplies dwindled dangerously low. Fortunately, they managed to bring the situation under control by 6:30 PM. Although the incident ended without catastrophic damage, one firefighter required medical attention for smoke inhalation and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Initial investigations suggest that the fire's ignition was linked to oil residues igniting during welding work being performed on the vessel, which had been docked in New Orleans since February 18 for maintenance.
