PHILIPPINE SEA, November 17, 2013 – The USNS Bowditch, an oceanographic survey ship, played a crucial role in the humanitarian response off the coast of Tacloban, Philippines, as it established safer maritime pathways for the George Washington Strike Group. This effort was part of Operation Damayan, formulated to support the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade following the devastating impact of Typhoon Haiyan. Serving as a platform for collecting oceanographic data, Bowditch conducted thorough surveys to assess surface, mid-water, and ocean floor conditions. After a major storm, such assessments are vital to confirm seabed characteristics and pinpoint potential navigational hazards. Since the typhoon struck, Bowditch has been actively engaged in acoustic, biological, physical, and geophysical surveys in the surrounding offshore waters. "Bowditch has proven to be an invaluable asset to the strike group. Following a significant disaster like this, particularly in an area known for its shifting sands, it’s essential to obtain precise topographic details of the ocean to ensure the safe operation of our relief vessels, especially amphibious ships approaching the coastline," said Navy Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery, commander of the George Washington Strike Group. "Bowditch was nearly first on the scene and has been diligently surveying Leyte Gulf. We expect her to conclude operations in the next 24 to 36 hours," Montgomery added.
