USNS Cornelius H. Charlton Loses Moorings in South Baltimore Amid Gale Winds
On December 29, 2025, the USNS 'Cornelius H. Charlton' experienced a severe incident when it broke loose from its moorings in South Baltimore during strong gale force winds. The mishap occurred around 3 p.m. in the Locust Point area, where the ship's ramp collapsed into the water, resulting in notable damage. Emergency response teams quickly dispatched tugs and the 'Fire Boat 1' from the Baltimore City Fireboat Station to assist in regaining control of the vessel. At that time, the 'Cornelius H. Charlton' was docked at a pier leased by the Maritime Administration as part of a transfer process. Previously, it had been joined by another military ship, the USNS 'Pomeroy,' which was relocated to the Norfolk Naval Station in September. These vessels were formerly part of the Military Sealift Command’s prepositioned fleet, strategically positioned in the Indian Ocean with Army equipment ready to be deployed at a moment's notice. Both ships had recently arrived at a pier near the Silo Point condominiums and the former Under Armour headquarters in the spring. Compounding the situation, the National Weather Service had issued a gale warning, predicting winds ranging from 34 to 47 knots for the duration of the night.
