USS Mount Whitney Arrives in Eastern Mediterranean Amid Rising Tensions
On October 18, 2023, the Pentagon announced the deployment of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) along with several amphibious vessels to the Eastern Mediterranean. This strategic move aims to prepare for any crisis-response missions in Israel or Gaza amidst escalating regional tensions. The USS Mount Whitney, the command ship for the U.S. 6th Fleet, is now part of this increased naval presence off the Israeli coast, reinforcing support for Israel’s defense while sending a strong message of deterrence to any groups contemplating involvement in the ongoing conflict. Currently, the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), comprising three amphibious ships and about 2,000 Marines, has been operating in the area since the summer. The USS Bataan and USS Carter Hall, initially on a mission near the Strait of Hormuz, are now heading back towards Israel. Meanwhile, the USS Mesa Verde has recently left Spain to join the flotilla in the Mediterranean for as-yet undisclosed reasons. In addition, the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford and its escort vessels are positioned near the Gaza coast, while the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is en route to add to the naval strength in the region. With its Blue Ridge-class capabilities, USS Mount Whitney acts as a critical command platform, serving the dual role of flagship for the 6th Fleet and facilitating NATO's naval operations. Notably, this vessel is equipped to transport supplies necessary for a potential mass evacuation of up to 3,000 personnel, a vital resource should American citizens need to be extricated from the conflict zone.
