Container Ship Vera Rambow Involved in Serious Allision at Kiel Canal Locks
On February 5, 2016, a significant maritime incident occurred in the Kiel Canal locks of Brunsbüttel when the container ship 'Vera Rambow' was struck by the 'Nordana Sky'. The 'Vera Rambow', which was navigating from Riga to Bremerhaven, had entered the northern lock at approximately 10 a.m. and secured herself alongside the middle wall. However, the 'Nordana Sky', en route from St. Petersburg to the Suez Canal, was unable to halt its momentum in time, resulting in a collision with the stern of the 'Vera Rambow'. The impact caused a substantial breach, measuring several meters, in the waterline of the container ship. Both vessels sustained considerable damage and were subsequently held for investigations. Following the accident, the 'Vera Rambow' departed the locks at around 1:15 p.m. and was redirected to Hamburg, where it docked at Steinwerder 1-3, formerly known as the United Container Terminal, to unload its cargo. Meanwhile, the 'Nordana Sky' successfully berthed at the South Quay in Brunsbüttel at 9:30 a.m., where it awaited further assessments regarding the damage incurred.
Disruption in Maritime Travel: 'Vera Rambow' Diverted to Kiel Amid Canal Lock Closures
On April 8, 2013, at 7 p.m., the cargo vessel 'Vera Rambow' was rerouted from its journey between Kotka and Rotterdam, making an unexpected stop at Norway Quay in Kiel. This diversion was prompted by ongoing closures of the Brunsbüttel locks in the Kiel Canal, attributable to inadequate maintenance. Affected by the disruption, the shipping company Unifeeder found itself in a predicament as the German Transport Minister Ramsauer joined other dignitaries at the Annual Maritime Conference taking place in the same vicinity. Initially, the German corvette 'Erfurt' and survey ship 'Alkor' were scheduled to enhance the event's backdrop, but both vessels remained docked instead. The reception concluded around 8 p.m., allowing the 'Vera Rambow' to finally resume its course toward the Kiel Canal.
