The incident took place at coordinates 40°42'N 27°36'E as both vessels were traveling in the same eastern direction. However, the "Verlaine" was moving at a significantly faster pace, leading to the unfortunate collision. Following the incident, the "Verlaine" proceeded to an anchorage north of Saraylar on Marmara Island, where it successfully dropped anchor. Meanwhile, the tug and the "Maryam M" continued on their slower, more controlled path, albeit in different directions. At the time of the collision, the "Verlaine" was en route from Abu Qir to Tuzla, while the "Maryam M" was being towed from Alger to Istanbul (Ambarlı).
