Incident In Brunsbüttel: Vestvind Allides with Kiel Canal Locks

Mar 04, 2025 10:31

On March 2, 2025, at 9:13 PM local time, the 'Vestvind', traveling from Portsmouth, UK, to Nakskov, encountered an allision with the middle wall of the southern chamber of the Kiel Canal locks in Brunsbüttel. The vessel was delayed inside the lock for over two hours before the tugs 'Grossnordsee' (IMO: 9067271) and 'Fairplay-57' (IMO: 9036246) came to assist, skillfully towing it out and guiding it to the Navy dolphins at the Brunsbüttel canal port. The 'Vestvind' remained at this location until roughly 10 AM on March 3. After resolving the situation, the ship finally set sail again, reaching Nakskov by March 4 at approximately 9:30 AM UTC.

Suspicion Grows as Two Syrian Men Identified as Terrorists on German Ship 'Vestvind'

Jun 22, 2023 22:07

A troubling incident has emerged involving the cargo vessel 'Vestvind' that is currently navigating the waters off Ionian Calabria. Since June 13, 2023, two Syrian illegal immigrants, believed to be terrorists, have been hiding on board the ship which was en route from Izmir to Swinoujscie. The crew of the 'Vestvind' raised the alarm upon discovering the injured men concealed amidst the cargo, with one in serious condition. An examination of their mobile phones by local authorities revealed alarming images showing the men brandishing Kalashnikov rifles, heightening suspicions of their connections to terrorist activities. Syrian officials confirmed on June 21 that these individuals were indeed wanted for terrorism-related offenses back home. Upon their initial discovery, Captain Maximiliano Zidekter recognized the need for urgent medical assistance and sought permission from the port of Messina to transfer the men to health care providers. However, Messina authorities indicated they lacked the necessary personnel to manage the situation. In response, the ship's owner, who is seeking legal assistance from lawyer Enrico Mirti della Valle, filed an application on June 21 to the Municipality of Messina, local police, the Public Ministry, and the Port Authority to obtain authorization for the vessel to dock and disembark the individuals. So far, a decision has yet to be made, and it has been noted that a request from the Portuguese government to the General Command of the Port Authorities in Rome is required for any further action. If granted approval, the 'Vestvind' might be able to dock at Paraíso, where a patrol boat from the Captaincy, along with local police, would facilitate the disembarkation of the two Syrian men, whose troubling background has sparked widespread concern.
