Cruise Ship Allision in Ushuaia: Windy Conditions Lead to Minor Damage

Jan 07, 2026 11:43

On January 5, 2026, the cruise vessel 'World Voyager' (IMO: 9871529) faced a harrowing incident at Ushuaia's port when it broke free from its mooring due to winds reaching 30 knots, with gusts escalated to 40 knots. The ship was adrift, trailing its gangway from the starboard side. During its drift, the 'World Voyager' first collided with the port infrastructure before striking the starboard bow of the nearby cruise ship 'Viking Octantis', which was securely docked. Fortunately, the impact occurred above the waterline, preventing any water ingress and resulting in only minor damage to the rear railing of the 'Viking Octantis'. The bow of the 'World Voyager' sustained a superficial crack; however, there were no reported structural damages or injuries among the crew and passengers. Following the allision, 'World Voyager' dropped anchor at coordinates 54° 48' S 068° 16 W, preparing for a journey towards Yankee HRB, with an estimated time of arrival (ETA) of January 8. Conversely, the 'Viking Octantis' departed Ushuaia on January 6, heading to Fournier Bay, and also set its ETA for January 8. The incident has prompted the Argentine Naval Prefecture to initiate an official report to ascertain the details surrounding the allision. Initial investigations revealed that a line belonging to the 'World Voyager' snapped at the stern, rather than a port mooring line. This incident occurred while the National Ports and Navigation Agency (ANPYN) was conducting inspections of Ushuaia's port due to previous complaints regarding its deteriorating infrastructure. An on-site examination by the national port authority subsequently highlighted several structural deficiencies, including issues with the port fenders.
