On May 17, 2010, a significant incident occurred in the Kiel Canal when the vessel 'Geopotes 14', identified by IMO number 8316780, discharged nearly one ton of heavy fuel oil. The spill happened around 4 a.m. in the section between Dückerswisch and Brunsbüttel, attributed to a steering vent that had been improperly installed during repairs at a shipyard in Gdynia, where the ship originated. Following the incident, emergency response teams from Rendsburg and Brunsbüttel sprang into action to tackle the cleanup efforts at Dückerswisch, focusing on recovering the spilled oil. Unfortunately, the extent of the contamination stretched all the way to Brunsbüttel, and much of the oil became unrecoverable. After necessary repairs were completed in Brunsbüttel, 'Geopotes 14' continued its journey towards Rotterdam later that same afternoon, currently on approach to the Dutch coastline.
