Tug of War: Norholm Successfully Towed to Safety at Scapa Flow

Dec 09, 2014 11:20

The fishing vessel 'Norholm' encountered severe conditions as she approached Scapa Flow on December 8, 2023, at 8 p.m. The ship faced significant challenges while navigating the Pentland Firth, where her anchors tragically began to drag along the seabed. This led to the vessel drifting perilously towards the shoreline at a rate of over half a mile per hour. Fortunately, the dedicated crew of the Kinlochbervie Lifeboat intervened, managing to stop the 'Norholm' just half a mile from the potentially perilous shore. Throughout the night, the Kinlochbervie Lifeboat crew, comprised of seven brave volunteers, worked tirelessly to tow the vessel to safer waters. They successfully maneuvered her around the headland, all while awaiting the arrival of the emergency tug 'Herakles.' At around 5:30 a.m., after a long night of difficulty battling massive swells, the lifeboat crew returned home, reaching the port by 7 a.m. In the meantime, the volunteers from the Thurso Lifeboat remained on standby until the Orkney-based tug reached Scapa Flow. Subsequently, the workboat 'Voe Viking' took the 'Norholm' alongside in Stromness, completing the journey shortly after midnight. Thanks to the quick action and teamwork of these crews, the situation was resolved without further incident.

Norholm Fishing Vessel Rescued Near Cape Wrath

Dec 08, 2014 11:34

On December 7, 2014, at approximately 8 p.m., the fishing carrier "Norholm" encountered a perilous situation off Cape Wrath in the North West Highlands. The vessel lost engine power amid a fierce westerly gale, leaving it adrift and dangerously close to the shoreline. Despite the crew's efforts to utilize the ship's anchors to maintain distance from the coast, their attempts proved ineffective. In response to the emergency, the Stornoway coastguard helicopter was dispatched to assist in the event that the four-man crew would need to evacuate the vessel. Fortunately, assistance arrived swiftly as the Lochinver lifeboat successfully managed to stabilize the "Norholm" away from the treacherous coast, with the Thurso lifeboat also rushing to the scene to lend support, alongside the Coastguard tug, "Herakles." The joint efforts of these rescue teams ensured the safety of the crew and the vessel.
