Cargo Collision in Taganrog Bay: Details of the Incident Involving 'Volzhskiy 47' and 'Volga 4051'

In the early hours of May 5, 2023, at precisely 01:55 a.m., a maritime incident occurred involving the 'Volzhskiy 47' and the cargo vessel 'Volga 4051' (IMO: 8720228), flagged from St. Kitts-Nevis. This collision took place in Taganrog Bay, roughly seven cables from the entrance buoy of the Yeysk entrance fairway in the Azov Sea. At the time, 'Volga 4051' was in the process of approaching port, transporting 5,400 tons of coal from Istanbul, when it collided with the outbound 'Volzhskiy 47', which was en route from Yeisk to Trabzon. The impact occurred amidships on the port side of 'Volzhskiy 47'. As a result of the collision, 'Volga 4051' sustained damage to its bow, with an estimated 1.5 meters of damage above the waterline. Meanwhile, the 'Volzhskiy 47' experienced a significant fracture on its main deck measuring approximately 3 to 4 meters in length, in addition to damage to 12 meters of railings and the cover of cargo hold No.3. As of May 5, both vessels remain anchored near the port awaiting further actions regarding the incident.

On October 7, 2010, the cargo vessel 'Volzhskiy 47', bearing IMO number 8933564, encountered a grounding incident while navigating the Volga River at the 1388 km mark. This event marked the second grounding incident for the vessel within a four-month period. At the time, it was transporting a shipment of grain from Eisk to Chistopol. Fortunately, around 6 p.m., the tug 'OT-2461' was able to assist in refloating the vessel without any reported damages or spills. Subsequently, the 'Volzhskiy 47' continued on its journey, ensuring minimal disruption to its cargo operations.
