Repeated Detention of 'Vulin' Raises Concerns After Recent Boston Incident

Mar 14, 2026 22:09

On March 8, 2026, the vessel 'Vulin' faced its second detention in just over six months, this time occurring in Boston, UK. The ship was found to have eight deficiencies, four of which were classified as serious enough to warrant detention. These serious issues included an invalid safety management certificate, problems with the emergency power source, and deficiencies related to the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. The specific deficiencies noted were: 1) An invalid Safety Management Certificate, 2) Various unspecified issues, 3) Inadequate emergency power generator requirements, and 4) Noncompliance with ISM certification standards. Following inspections, the 'Vulin' was released from detention on March 11 and proceeded to Antwerp. This recent detention follows a previous incident on August 4, 2025, when the vessel was held in Seaham due to 21 reported deficiencies, including one serious enough to extend its detention until August 12. The growing pattern of regulatory issues with the 'Vulin' emphasizes the need for thorough inspections and adherence to maritime safety standards.

Vulin Detained in Seaham Over Deficiencies

Aug 20, 2025 09:15

On August 4, 2025, the cargo vessel Vulin faced a serious inspection setback in Seaham, with authorities identifying 21 deficiencies. Among these issues, one was particularly severe, leading to its detention: the ISM certification did not meet required standards. After a period of scrutiny, the Vulin was finally released on August 12, continuing its journey to Ghent, where it successfully docked on August 20. The challenges faced by the Vulin highlight the importance of compliance within maritime operations.

Disabled Cargo Ship Pilsum Successfully Berths in Poole

Jan 02, 2018 10:56

In a significant development, the cargo ship Pilsum has successfully docked at the port of Poole around 09:00 on January 2, 2018. The vessel was initially assisted to a secure anchorage in Poole Bay on December 31, 2017, due to mechanical difficulties. Authorities worked diligently to ensure the safe arrival of the Pilsum, marking a careful resolution to the vessel's challenges.

Disabled Cargo Ship 'Pilsum' Rescued and Towed to Safety in Poole Bay

Jan 01, 2018 18:28

On the afternoon of December 31, 2017, the cargo ship 'Pilsum', en route from Antwerp to Truro, Cornwall, experienced a loss of power while navigating the English Channel south of Weymouth. High winds, reaching up to 76 mph due to Storm Dylan, caused the vessel to drag its anchor just east of Portland Bill, sending it drifting northeast toward St Albans Head. The UK Coastguard was alerted shortly after 6 p.m. on January 1 when the situation began to escalate south of Lulworth. Weymouth Lifeboat was launched at 6:20 p.m., with the tug 'Kingston' (MMSI: 235013963) from Poole Harbour tasked to assist in the rescue operation. Given the precarious position of 'Pilsum', which was moving dangerously close to St Albans Head, the coxswain and the Swanage Lifeboat crew were put on standby. Just after 6 p.m., the Swanage crew was called into action and launched their lifeboat at 7:28 p.m. A crew had been organized for the New Yearโ€™s Eve coverage, and they arrived at the scene approximately 30 minutes later, just west of St Albans Head. The initial attempt by the tug to connect a tow was unsuccessful, requiring them to reposition for another attempt. After several tries, the tug successfully connected the towline to 'Pilsum', allowing the vessel to begin its slow journey to safety in Poole Bay. With the Weymouth Lifeboat stood down, the Swanage Lifeboat crew took over the escort, ensuring both the tug and the disabled ship reached a secure anchorage. Around 11 p.m., the tug and 'Pilsum' reached the anchorage outside of Poole Harbour, where the vessel's speed was reduced, and its anchor was dropped. The following day, on January 2, the cargo ship was safely towed into Poole and berthed at 10 a.m. This successful operation highlights the dedication of maritime rescue teams in challenging weather conditions.
