Fri Dolphin Ordered to Dock in Brest Amid Safety Concerns

Feb 15, 2020 22:10

Maritime authorities mandated the docking of the 'Fri Dolphin' in Brest to prioritize safety as adverse weather conditions loom. This decision was reached through discussions between the ship's owner and local departmental authorities, ensuring adequate precautions ahead of the predicted storms. The crew, comprising seven members—six Russians and one Ukrainian—was provided accommodations in the region following the incident. Tragically, a 42-year-old Russian sailor lost his life, while three other crew members, aged 32, 49, and 56, sustained injuries and are currently in stable condition at the Cavale-Blanche hospital in Brest. The Bahamas' Bureau of Investigation and Analysis (BEA), along with the French BEA, has initiated a technical inquiry to uncover the circumstances surrounding the accident, which appears to have been triggered by weather-related impacts on the bilge fans, leading to the release of toxic phosphine gas within the ship's living quarters. The 'Fri Dolphin' departed Brest on February 22 at 8:20 a.m., en route to Kingston-upon-Hull with an expected arrival on February 25. Tragic Fumigation Incident Claims Life Aboard 'Fri Dolphin'

Feb 14, 2020 10:00

On February 13, 2020, a distress signal was sent out by the freighter 'Fri Dolphin' at 6:33 p.m., reporting that four of its crew members had suffered from poisoning attributed to fumigation. The vessel was located approximately 60 nautical miles southwest of Lanvéoc. Following communication with the Maritime Medical Consultation Center (CCMM), the CROSS Corsen coordinated a rescue mission involving a Caïman helicopter from the Navy base in Lanvéoc. Despite challenging weather conditions, a rescue swimmer was deployed to the stricken vessel, with a medical team from the Finistère emergency medical aid service (SAMU) following in a second flight. Tragically, a doctor from SAMU confirmed the death of one sailor among the four affected by the toxic exposure. Fortunately, the other three crew members were reported to be in stable condition; however, due to worsening weather, they could not be airlifted. To ensure their safety, the 'Fri Dolphin' altered its course toward Brest, arriving at the port at 5:10 a.m. on February 14. The surviving crew members were then transferred to the lifeboat 'SNS 097 - Notre Dame de Rocamadour' from the SNSM station Camaret-sur-Mer and subsequently taken to Cavale Blanche Hospital in Brest for treatment. The 'Fri Dolphin', which was originally on a route from Pasajes to Kingston-upon-Hull with an estimated arrival date of February 16, docked at the Quay Considère in Brest at 7:15 p.m. on the same day.
