Disabled Container Ship 'Wan Hai 176' Towed Safely to San Francisco Bay
On April 8, 2022, the US Coast Guard, in collaboration with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Office of Spill Prevention and Response and Marin County, was alerted to the predicament of the 'Wan Hai 176'. This container ship had suffered engine failure and was drifting approximately seven miles off the coast of Point Reyes, California, with 21 crew members aboard. Around 1 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received notifications about the vessel's engine troubles while it was located 12 miles offshore. By 3:45 p.m., the situation escalated as the captain conveyed their inability to anchor, causing the ship to drift closer to the shoreline. Tugs were solicited for assistance at 6 p.m. Amid the unfolding events, the Coast Guard directed the dispatch of air support at around 6:20 p.m., deploying crews from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento with a C-27J Spartan and air crews from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to assess the scene. A unified command was formed by Coast Guard officials, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Marin County to streamline their response as the situation developed into the morning of April 9. The 'Wan Hai 176' managed to remain stable at anchor overnight while the tugs made their way to the vessel's location. The Tug Stacey Foss arrived at 10 p.m. to provide assistance, followed by the arrival of tugs Delta Deanna and Delta Billie around 2:30 a.m. However, due to challenging weather conditions, these towing vessels were initially unable to deploy lines to secure the ship. With the 'Wan Hai 176' holding approximately 39,000 gallons of fuel—about eight percent of its full capacity—authorities reported no pollution incidents. The container ship was carrying assorted materials in 783 containers, with no hazardous materials noted. As weather conditions improved, the 'Delta Deanna' successfully passed tow lines to the crew of 'Wan Hai 176' at its anchored position on the evening of April 10. Following the successful securing of lines and anchors, the tug commenced towing the vessel, assisted by tugs Stacey Foss, Delta Billie, Delta Deanna, and Rachel Allen toward anchorage nine in the San Francisco Bay. The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of San Francisco mandated that the vessel remain at this anchorage until repairs to the engines are completed and inspections by Coast Guard personnel are conducted. Once these procedures are fulfilled, the ship is set to be escorted out of San Francisco Bay by the tugs.
