On August 30, 2018, at 10 p.m. local time, the container ship Wan Hai 502 (IMO number not specified) grounded in the South China Sea, specifically within the Karimata Strait at coordinates 01°13′S 106°50′E. The vessel was navigating from Singapore to Jakarta when it unexpectedly ran aground onto a reef while operating at full speed. Efforts to carry out a lightering operation to reduce the ship's weight have encountered challenges due to worsening weather conditions in the area. To assist with the complex refloating process, SMIT Salvage has been appointed and is actively mobilizing necessary equipment to the site of the grounding.
