APL Illinois Aids in Dramatic Rescue of 30 Fishermen After Fishing Vessel Sinks

Sep 13, 2013 15:57

In a remarkable display of maritime coordination, the container ship APL Illinois played an instrumental role in the rescue of 30 fishermen following the unfortunate sinking of the Taiwanese tuna fishing vessel Jin-Shan-Mei. This incident transpired on September 12, 2013, at approximately 10:40 p.m. in the Malaysia-Indonesia international waters, roughly 18 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Jarak. The Jin-Shan-Mei reportedly sank after colliding with a container ship. The crew aboard the sunken vessel included a diverse group: one Taiwanese national, 11 Chinese citizens, four each from Vietnam and Indonesia, along with five individuals from Korea and the Philippines. These fishermen were en route from Cape Town, South Africa, to Singapore when disaster struck. Luckily, all crew members, aged between 23 and 45, managed to escape unscathed by utilizing two lifeboats before the vessel went under. Following the sinking, at around 12:30 a.m., a search and rescue operation was initiated, involving the Coastguard vessel Tugau. The fishermen were successfully retrieved and transported to the Kampung Acheh Customs Jetty. The incident highlights the dangers of international fishing routes and the importance of timely maritime rescue operations.
