Collision in Lingding Channel: Bulk Carrier Sinks, Two Crew Missing

Oct 27, 2025 10:27

On October 25, 2025, at approximately 8 p.m. Singapore time, a significant maritime incident occurred when the 'Wan Hai A17', a container ship navigating from Ningbo to Guangzhou with a crew of 23, collided with the Chinese bulk carrier 'Hai Li 5' (MMSI: 412356350), which was en route from Huangpu to Guangzhou. The collision transpired near the Mayoushi Lightship in the Lingding Channel, in the Pearl River Estuary. As the 'Wan Hai A17' was preparing to enter Nansha Port, the 'Hai Li 5' reportedly experienced a power failure, which led to a lack of control and a subsequent impact with the bow of the container vessel. The collision caused severe water ingress into the bulk carrier, which ultimately sank due to substantial damage. In response to the emergency, the crew of the container ship promptly deployed life vests, activated emergency beacons, and lowered lifeboats to aid in the Search and Rescue (SAR) efforts directed by local maritime authorities. According to the Guangzhou Maritime Safety Administration (MSA), 13 of the 15 crew members aboard the bulk carrier were rescued, while SAR operations remained active. The accident took place in a highly trafficked area, critical for connecting Guangzhou and Shenzhen's western ports, prompting quick action from authorities who deployed both aerial and maritime resources for rescue efforts. Temporary traffic controls were established across the affected channel, advising vessels to maintain safe distances and adhere to Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) and patrol vessel directions. Logistics operations faced interruptions, impacting navigation through Nansha, Huangpu, and Humen terminals. Meanwhile, the 'Wan Hai A17', part of Wan Hai's Asia-U.S. East Coast β€œAA7” service, berthed in Nansha on October 26 without any injuries reported among its crew. Fortunately, there were no leaks from the container ship following the incident. Chinese authorities have detained the 13,400 TEU container ship involved in the collision, and the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) has initiated its investigation into the circumstances surrounding this maritime collision. Vessels traversing the area have been advised to maintain a one nautical mile distance from the Mayoushi Lighthouse while complying with instructions from the Guangzhou Vessel Traffic Service and local patrol vessels.
