Heroic Rescue at Kiel Fjord: Sailor Plucked from Capsized Dinghy

Mar 31, 2025 09:48

On March 29, 2025, at around 5 p.m., the dedicated crew of the cargo ship 'Warber', on a journey from Rouen to Södertalje, spotted a capsized sailing boat adrift approximately 250 meters away from the iconic Laboe Naval Memorial in the Kiel Fjord. Unfortunately, the vessel's draft prevented them from offering immediate assistance. The sailor, a 45-year-old man from Kiel, was struggling to right his dinghy and was already suffering from the effects of hypothermia. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the 'Warber' crew promptly contacted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) of the DGzRS in Bremen. This led to the swift mobilization of the lifeboat 'Jürgen Horst', which is based in Kiel-Schilksee and was on patrol at the time. Within six minutes, these brave volunteers, racing through the water at speeds of up to 38 knots, reached the scene to rescue the stranded sailor from the frigid waters, which were measured at just six degrees Celsius. Upon retrieval, initial medical assessments indicated that the sailor's body temperature had dangerously dropped to 34.7 degrees Celsius. The heroic lifeboat crew quickly transported him to Laboe, where he was seamlessly handed over to the waiting land rescue service that had been dispatched during the emergency. Thanks to the swift actions of both the 'Warber' crew and the lifeboat volunteers, a potential tragedy was averted in the chilly waters of the Kiel Fjord.
