USS Hershel Williams Grounds Off Gabon but Remains Operational
On May 9, 2024, the USS Hershel Williams encountered a grounding incident off the coast of Gabon, specifically on a soft bottom area, shortly after departing from a port visit in Libreville. This event occurred around 1 p.m. GMT as the vessel was conducting operations with the U.S. 6th Fleet and the U.S. Naval Forces Africa. Fortunately, the ship successfully refloated by approximately 5 p.m. GMT with the aid of the incoming high tide. Fortunately, no injuries or significant damage were reported, and the USS Hershel Williams continued its operations in the Gabon estuary, just south of Libreville. Subsequently, the Navy initiated a thorough inspection of the vessel to evaluate any possible damage resulting from the grounding while simultaneously launching an investigation into the incident's causes. The USS Hershel Williams was in Gabon to kick off Obangame Express 2024, an annual multinational exercise designed to bolster maritime domain awareness and law enforcement. While questions about the vessel’s participation in planned activities, such as testing a surface drone, may have been raised due to the incident, there was no immediate effect on the exercise schedule confirmed at this time.
