Wagenborg Expands Fleet with Purchase of Westgard from Bore
In a strategic move, Finnish shipping company Bore has announced its decision to divest its general cargo fleet as it shifts its focus towards roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) operations. The company disclosed on Tuesday that it is selling off six vessels, a part of its contract of affreightment (CoA) business, which has faced years of over-capacity and unsustainable profitability. Bore cited the limited size of its CoA fleet as a key factor contributing to its competitiveness challenges in the increasingly tough general cargo market. Among the vessels acquired by Wagenborg are the 3,700-dwt Nordgard, built in 1999, and the 3,800-dwt Sydgard and Westgard, both launched in 2000, as well as Ostgard, delivered in 2001. These vessels are scheduled to be transferred to Wagenborg by the end of December. As a consequence of this restructure, Bore anticipates potential redundancy for up to 19 of its 31 shore-based workers. Furthermore, limestone company Nordkalk has secured a three-year agreement with Wagenborg to transport cargoes through 2017, marking a new chapter in its logistics strategy.
Navigational Incident Involving the WESTBORG 9196187 at Brundbuettel
On March 25, 2011, the vessel known as the 'Westborg' experienced a significant power failure, characterized by a total machine blackout while navigating into the newly constructed Northern lock at Brundbuettel. Despite efforts to halt its movement through emergency anchoring, the ship regrettably collided with staging structures. The situation prompted the immediate response of the tugboat 'Bugsier 15,' which provided essential assistance by towing the 'Westborg' into the lock chamber. Following the incident, the ship was safely moored in the canal harbor of Brunsbuettel for further inspection before resuming its journey to Kaskinen, with an estimated time of arrival set for March 26.
