In a significant maritime development, the container vessel 'Van Manila' has been seized following a ruling by the Shanghai Maritime Court. This decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving the cargo ship 'Xiang Zhou' (IMO-No.: 8747147), which sank on April 6, after a collision with 'Van Manila' east of the Yangtze estuary. Of the 14 crew members aboard the 'Xiang Zhou', only two were rescued, while 12 are still missing, prompting intense scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the incident. Reports indicate that the Korean captain of the 'Van Manila' deactivated the AIS (Automatic Identification System) and absconded from the collision site immediately after the accident. At the time of the incident, 'Van Manila' was departing from Shanghai. The vessel has since been ordered to return to port and remains anchored at Shanghai anchorage since April 6, under close observation.
