Major Blaze Erupts on Cape Moreton Boxship at Manila Dock

Sep 12, 2015 18:50

On September 12, 2015, a significant fire ignited aboard the cargo vessel 'Cape Moreton' while it was moored at the Manila International Container Terminal in Tondo, Manila, at precisely 09:12 a.m. The incident began with an explosion inside the vessel, which was crewed by Russian personnel. By 9:15 a.m., thick plumes of smoke were clearly visible rising from shipping containers in the vicinity following the initial blast. In response to the emergency, approximately 20 fire trucks from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) rushed to the scene, while the Philippine Coast Guard deployed their vessels 'SARV-001 - San Juan' and 'SARV 3502 - Nueva Vizcaya' to assist in combating the flames. BFP firefighters boarded the 'Cape Moreton' to work alongside the crew in attempting to control the fire. The situation escalated, reaching a third alarm by 9:52 a.m. and ultimately a fourth alarm at 11:24 a.m. After nearly nine hours of intense firefighting efforts, the fire was declared extinguished at 5:37 p.m. Multiple fire trucks, along with additional Coast Guard vessels 'DF-309', 'DF-334', and 'DF-312', worked tirelessly throughout the ordeal. Challenges arose as responders struggled to access the lower deck due to their unfamiliarity with the ship's layout. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze, though initial findings from the Coast Guard suggest that the fire originated in cargoholds 4 and 5, which contained containers filled with sodium hydroxide.
