Severe Storm Disrupts Ship Operations at Brisbane Port

Nov 26, 2025 10:13

On November 24, 2025, a fierce storm hit the port of Brisbane, leading to the dislodging of four vessels as wind gusts reached a staggering 70 knots. In response to this incident, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has initiated an investigation, with findings expected in the second quarter of 2026. The ATSB is focusing on a thorough analysis of the winches and equipment, including mooring lines and anchor systems, while collecting vital evidence such as data logs and documents from the involved ships, vessel traffic services, and pilotage providers. Investigators are also set to interview the ship masters, pilots, and other relevant personnel. The impacted vessels include the container ship 'Volans' (IMO: 9430777), which is chartered to COSCO for the JKN service connecting Asia and New Zealand through Brisbane; the 'Wide India', leased to Hapag-Lloyd for their SEA service from Southeast Asia to Australia; the 'MSC Barbara' (IMO: 9226932), servicing the MSC’s Panda route from China; and the 'Viking Passama' (IMO: 9491874). Fortunately, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads reported no significant damage to any of the vessels or port infrastructure, and there were no injuries or pollution incidents. Around 3 p.m. local time, as the 'Viking Passama' attempted to berth, strong winds forced the ship away from the wharf, causing four mooring lines to snap, which resulted in it drifting into the center of the shipping channel. Two tugs were deployed to assist in guiding the ship back alongside the dock once winds eased. Shortly afterward, the 'MSC Barbara' lost its mooring lines, drifting across the channel and grounding in the muddy bottom of Morton Bay, east of Mud Island. Skilled pilots successfully boarded the stranded vessel, allowing it to be refloated and moved to an anchorage area just outside the harbor for hull inspections by divers. In a parallel incident, the 'Wide India' also broke free from its mooring due to snapped lines but managed to maintain its position in the channel until pilots arrived to escort it to safety. The 'Volans' partially broke free as well, with its remaining mooring lines effectively keeping it close to the wharf until it was safely repositioned. Finally, all vessels were secured at anchor, and the Port of Brisbane resumed shipping operations that evening. As of November 26, the 'MSC Barbara' remained anchored in Brisbane, while the 'Volans' set sail the same day towards Auckland, with an estimated time of arrival on November 26. The 'Viking Passama' departed for Port Kembla on November 25, with an ETA of November 29, while the 'Wide India' left Brisbane on the same day, heading for Tanjung Pelapas and expected to arrive by December 8.
